Zuza Zada of the Kakapo Nest (Dolce)

24-09-2001 - 19-12-2002

A terrible thing has happened… Dolce is no longer with us.

Her Belgium owners sms me, when I was in Denmark to mate Tieka, that things were not looking good with Dolce after her sterilization. I spent a day waiting for the next sms to tell me things were looking better, but this never came. Instead I got the awful news of Dolces death; I am shocked and so very sad. Later also extremely angry feelings as Dolces death is due to a sloppy operation! You can read this in Dolces owner’s last letter to Dolce.

The strangest thing is that a few hours later Tieka finally mates with Caio, we had let them try for 4 days with no luck. The next litter, the “y” litter, is in memory of Dolce, our shy truffle baby, who has died far before her time.

Dolce’s page will of coarse stay and I will add some more photos I just received. They show her so grown up and lovely. Please be patient as I first have to sort out “the best” photos for her page.

Lovely songs don’t last long… by Marleen, Dolces best friend and owner

It has been raining the whole week. What should have been a happy white Christmas had make room for drizzly autumn weather.

A week ago Dolce was de-sexed on a Thursday night (19-12-02). She couldn’t get over it: she only got worse instead of     getting better. We visited different vets; none could have guessed how badly this operation had been done.

Monday morning Dolce died…. An autopsy showed that a piece of tissue around the intestines had been bound together along with the oviduct. So the blood circulation to the intestines had been halted and the intestine was dieing. It’s amazing that Dolce lived till Monday morning; she must have been very strong.

A whole week I have not been to the forest…. I just can’t.. I really can’t do it!

I don’t go for walks in the streets of our peaceful town at night. When I am having another attack of my sickness and I can’t get out of my chair there is no cuddly truffle baby to cheer me up and keep me company.

In the morning I can turn around as much as I like; there isn’t the call from Dolce to say she knows I’m awake.

No more enthusiastic greetings when I walk into the room….

When I come back from the bathroom there is no over enthusiastic greetings as if I have been away for a year instead of only 10 minutes…

The car stays clean, no dog to jump up in expectation when I stop the car.

I don’t have to find someone to drive me to Italy in March for the truffle competitions….

It seems as if when we go outside everyone is suddenly taking their dogs for a walk, every shop seems to have a dog in their window dressing, the only sad part of a comedy film we look at to try and cheer us up is in a dog cemetery, and the weather is presented by a woman by the name of Mrs. Dog.

The vet says they will pay all the bills, even the cost price of Dolce.

Suddenly I realize that there is a “price” on the head of my dog, you “buy” a dog… But my dog is not for sale; she is priceless!

She endlessly comforted me when I was feeling sick and down, she played so happily with the children, she had the best doggie nose and was sometimes the child my partner and I could never have.

Dolce, you were a perfect dog for us, good bye my cuddly girl!!!
